3 from 3 for the Men’s Hockey Club
The weekend kicked off with a Friday night fixture in Garyduff as the Men’s 3rds took on Church of Ireland D for the second time in 5 days. The last time to two met UCC came out on top 5-3 winners and there was a similar result this time as the students continued their good run of form to come out 6-1 winners on this occasion. A strong first half left it 5-1 at the break. College eased off in the second half only adding one more goal but seeing off stiff opposition in style.
The Men’s firsts took of Church of Ireland B on Saturday afternoon and it was another case of 6-1. The first half was a scrappy affair but Gary Wilkinson broke the deadlock after 15 minutes and it wasn’t long before Wesley Brownlow doubled the lead, this one coming as a penalty stroke. UCC upped the tempo in the second half with Sam Grace finding the target, rifling home a drag flick. Greg Chambers was on fire as well scoring a second half hat-trick to bring is his tally to 5 goals in 2 games. Neil Welch will be happy to see his corner team functioning again especially with the big clash against Bandon next weekend.
The final game of the trio came on Sunday as the seconds traveled to Ashton. Again the students played at a high tempo and dominated from the word go. Glenn Healy opened the scoring with a rocket from the top of the circle, this was the first of 9 goals from UCC in the game. The corner routines seemed to work wonders again with both David Whitaker and Mark Horgan grabbing 2 each. Shane O’Halloran also claimed a brace for himself against his old club with Mark Hornibrook getting the 8th and Brandon McEvoy finishing off the days work from a broken down short corner. The game finished 9-1, captain Andrew McGregor will struggle to find many flaws but the team still haven’t had a clean sheet all season. They will look to build on this as they work toward their top of the table clash with Midleton.
